Pastor Matt Perry of Boone’s Creek Baptist Church has put a short review of JMB’s Alive 2005 on his blog.  Cool beans.  Thanks Matt!

Bibles for….Sale?

As most of you know, I have a fairly extensive Bible collection.  This stems from my (fairly) recent salvation (three years ago) and my desire to find the right Bible for me.  I still can’t say there’s one Bible I like the best, but I’ve at least narrowed down my selection.  With that said, and since I’m getting ready to move, I’m cleaning “house.”  I’m getting rid of old Bibles that I no longer use.  I would love to get some sort of money out of these, but should there be no takers, I’ll end up donating them to some sort of Bible drive.  Here’s what I’d like to get rid of:

NOTE:  SOME BIBLES HAVE OCCASIONAL UNDERLINED AND/OR HIGHLIGHTED SCRIPTURES.  MOST HAVE BEEN RARELY USED

  • A simple copy of the good ol’ King James Version.  This would be FREE to a good home.
  • Plain-and-simple Italian Duo-Tone NIV - a sharp little Bible that’s been rarely used.  $20.
  • Paperback Every Man’s Bible (New Living Translation, 1st edition).  A great Bible for men.  $10.
  • Compact New Century Version.  May be a good Bible for younger children - easy to read & understand.  $10.
  • Compact New Living Translation (1st edition) with leather cover.  Feels great in your hands.  I may end up keeping this one as it was the first Bible I purchased after getting saved.  Unless someone really wants it.  $15.
  • (another) compact New Living Translation (1st edition) with larger print & concordance.  $15.
  • Archaeological Study Bible (hardcover).  I think I’ve opened this maybe twice since buying it.  It’s the most popular Bible on the market right now, according to Amazon.com.  I would really like the leather-bound version instead.  Excellent condition (no underlined passages in this).   $35.

The Bibles that I’m keeping include:  NLT 2nd edition Life Application Study Bible, NLT 2nd edition Student’s Life Application Study Bible, NLT 2nd edition compact, ESV Scofield Study Bible III, Thinline ESV, NIV Study Bible, Quest Study Bible (NIV), NKJV Spirit Filled Bible, NKJV compact, and The Message Remix.  I’m also keeping the Bible I received for my college graduation that has my name etched into the cover.  It is a Today’s English Version.

Picking the font for the NLTse

I came across the article below while researching the NLTse (New Living Translation 2nd edition). I’m sure you can file this under the “geek” category, but as a designer, I found it interesting.

It talks about Tyndale wanting to minimize production costs with the increased volume of text in the NLTse. They ultimately chose a different font to be used with the NLTse, that would enable them to use less paper & ink.

Drum Lessons

I’m starting to teach drum lessons at Brad’s Music Center this coming Monday (August 21st).  The lessons are each Monday, last thirty minutes and cost is $15.  I prefer cash payments at the end of each lesson.  I specialize in beginner to intermediate drummers.  Right now, I have the following time slots open:

  • 7:00 p.m.
  • 7:30 p.m.
  • 8:00 p.m.
  • 8:30 p.m.
  • 9:00 p.m.

If you’re interested or have questions, email me.

Desiring God Conference

Looks like I’ll be attending the Desiring God Conference on September 29-October 1.  I’m very excited about this.  John Piper is one of my favorite authors, and this is his yearly conference.  It should be a great weekend of teaching.

On Prayer

It seems as though I’m writing something about prayer.  A good friend and I started an idea this past week of discussing a spiritual topic through email each week.  I picked the topic of prayer as our first discussion.  I think I’ve gone a bit overboard for an email discussion, so I’m taking it a new direction.  I don’t know yet what I will end up with, but I’ve written six pages about prayer so far.

The working title is “What Does the Bible Really Say About Prayer.”  My goal is to establish a fundamental understanding of prayer, keeping the Bible as the source.  As of now, I’ve yet to rely on sources other than the Bible in an effort to keep the focus on what the Bible says about prayer, and not what others think the Bible says about prayer.

An early theme that has started to develop revolves around assurance.  When we pray, we need to be confident the outcome is God’s will.  We may not get all of our prayers answered to our liking, but we should have the assurance of God’s plan at work in our lives.

I plan to provide updates on the project.  I’m interested to see the direction this goes.  I could be done with it very soon, and I could likely still be working on it a year from now.  We’ll see what happens…

eMusic.com

I received a notice from eMusic.com in my order for Musician’s Friend yesterday.  If I sign up for a free two-week trial, I can get 50 free downloads.  On top of this, they offer monthly subscriptions starting at $9.99.  The difference between their subscription and, say, Napster is that you are entitled to download as many as 40 songs per month for $9.99 and you own the songs.  With Napster, you’re limited to “renting” the songs.  If you cancel your subscription with Napster, the songs become void and will not play.  eMusic also offers songs in MP3 format, making them compatible with all MP3 players (imagine that!).  Napster, and most music services offer songs in the evil Windows Media format.  iTunes (not quite as evil) offers their songs in AAC format, making them only compatible with an iPod.

Reading all of this, I’m thinking, “this is great!”  I excitedly went to eMusic.com to start browsing their catalog.  This is where I discovered the catch.  Their offerings are rather poor right now.  I was unable to find a lot of the music I listen to on a regular basis.

It seems eMusic has the right idea.  Or, at least they have some good ideas.  But, until their catalog improves, I’ll be sticking with Napster & iTunes.

Blogging Directly From Firefox

I’m blogging this entry directly from Firefox.  I just found out about the Performancing 1.3 extension.  Once installed, I click an icon in the Firefox window and a blog editor pops up.  No need to go to my website, log into my blog, etc.  Purdy cool.

Have You Seen My Cable?

I’m missing a 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable.  Not being able to find this cable is entirely the reason why I didn’t update the JMB website this weekend (I need the cable to hook up the external drive that has the JMB site on it).  Has anyone seen it?

If anyone has an extra or two of these laying around, not getting any use, I’d love to take ‘em off your hands.  I can’t find them in stores anymore (only 4-pin to 6-pin), and a lot of my external FireWire gear needs 6-pin to 6-pin.

The Band I Didn’t Think I’d Like

Just picked up Snow Patrol’s newest - Eyes Open. I didn’t think I’d like them before, but after hearing “Chasing Cars,” I decided to check ‘em out. I’m likin’ this album.
