Happy Birthday Blog

As of yesterday, my blog is two years old.  I originally started this over at Blogger, but quickly moved to Wordpress.  It’s been fun to share a little bit of my boring life with anyone that may stumble across my blog.  It’s also been encouraging that I’ve motivated others to start their own blogs.  Feel free to explore the “archives” to see some of my first posts.  Also, feel free to explore other blogs in my blogroll.  Better yet - create your own blog!  There’s plenty of free options out there, and I’m always glad to help people get started.

In Case You Were Wondering…

And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

2 Peter 1:19-21 (Listen)

19 And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (Listen)

16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Good Deals

Since it’s holiday time, and everyone is shopping for gifts, I thought I’d pass along a couple of good deals I’ve come across.

  • Chris Tomlin: The Early Years - Wal-Mart is selling a double-CD set of Chris Tomlin’s first two albums, The Noise We Make and Not to Us at a bargain price of $13.88. I’m listening to Not to Us as I type this (side note: how do you write so many great songs on one album?)
  • Barnes & Noble Members Only Coupons - I recently became a Barnes & Noble member, due to buying a fair amount of books. Members usually save 10% on purchases, sometimes more. This week, they emailed me a coupon for an additional 15% off one time. I bit the bullet and finally purchased an ESV Reformation Study Bible. I saved over $25 off the retail price.

(I’m realizing now that this post was for gift buyers, and I’m talking about items I purchased for myself. Sounds a bit self-centered, eh? Don’t worry… I’ve already done my Christmas shopping for everyone else!)

Living for Monday

Ironically, it’s a Saturday, and I’m looking forward to Monday.  He’s my reasoning:

  • I teach drum lessons on Monday nights.  I really enjoy teaching lessons, and on top of it, I make a little extra money.  At the same time, I’m looking forward to a couple of weeks off from lessons due to the holidays.  I’ll be ready to go again after the first of the year.
  • Faster internet!  When I moved in with Brad, he had 128K (the slowest cable modem speed offered by FPB).  I offered to pay extra rent if he’d upgrade to a faster speed.  Due to a glitch in their system, they lost his upgrade request, and I’ve patiently waited for them to fix the problem.  Thanks to having a connection through CLS, I was able to make a call on Friday and get to the heart of the issue.  By Monday, we’ll be surfing here at the house at 2 Meg speed.  Finally, uploading stuff to websites, and downloading audio & video won’t take forever.
  • Monday Night Football - Bengals vs. Colts.  This is a huge game for the Bengals’ playoff hopes.  I’ll surely be watching.  I’m a firm believer in picking a team and cheering for them.  That’s how I’ve always been.  I’ll always be a die-hard Reds, Bengals, Bulls, Wildcats and Tigers fan.  But… I have to admit… if I were to cheer for another NFL team, it would be the Colts.

I figured looking forward to a Monday deserved a blog post.  It’ll probably never happen again.

Random Blogging

Since I haven’t blogged this week, I figure I’ll do a little random blogging…. let’s begin…

AOL Open Ride
If there are any AOL users out there, I recommend downloading Open Ride if you haven’t already done so.  I’m still not a big fan of AOL (I rarely use it), but Open Ride is a big step up from past software they’ve put out.  The downside?  Not available on Mac yet.  Here’s the link:

> Open Ride

the Josh Martin Band
The JMB is planning our first live DVD.  We’re very excited.  Be sure to keep March 31st available on your calendars.  That’s when we plan to record the DVD at Cedarmore.  We have a few new songs in the works, that will be a part of the DVD.  As a Christmas surprise, we’ve posted a little gift for all of you on our website:

> White Christmas

Cincinnati Bengals
My Bengals are getting hot at the right time of the year - unlike those Colts (sorry, Shane).  The tough part is, they will pretty much have to win all of their remaining games to make it into the playoffs - against some tough competition.  A Monday night game against the Colts, a trip to Denver, and a division battle with Pittsburgh.  Even though Denver & Pittsburgh aren’t playing well this year, they’re still tough teams to play this time of year.

New iPod
Since I plan on giving my iPod to my brother for Christmas (don’t worry - he won’t be reading this), I’ve purchased a new iPod.  It’s one of the fancy, whiz-bang iPods with the color screen and plays videos.  As I type this, I’m attempting to rip Christmas Vacation to my computer to transfer to the iPod.  The next cool thing will be downloading sermon videos from the likes of Mark Driscoll and John Piper.

First Snow

Just to make it official, Frankfort is experiencing its first snow of the season - Thursday, December 7th.  Nothing significant, but it’s white, falling from the sky, and sticking to the ground.  I am pro-snow.  I’m not quite sure I’d like to live somewhere that it snowed nearly everyday, but I don’t complain when we get a lot of snow in our area.  Last season was disappointing, so hopefully we’ll get more this year.

False Teaching in Frankfort

If any Frankfort-area Christians out there have been reading the State Journal lately, you may have noticed a local church’s ads featuring articles by their pastor. If you’ve read the articles, you may have been shocked by what you read. You’re not alone.

Rick’s blog has a good wrap up on the situation. Here’s my response:

Regarding False Teaching

2 Timothy 4:3-4 (Listen)

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

says “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. (ESV)”

My Life Application Study Bible note says:

Many speakers, teachers, and writers talk about the pursuit of knowledge. But often they don’t want knowledge; they want power. Such people won’t listen to “sound and wholesome teaching.” Instead, they “reject the truth and chase after myths.” You can see this everywhere - from liberal churches to university campuses. People claiming to have a bit more enlightenment than what the dusty Bible has to say; people claiming to improve on God’s words. Such people have several things in common:

(1) They do not tolerate truth. They have no interest or respect for absolute truth or any standard for judgment. (2) They reject truth for sensationalism. They want truth that fits their situation and makes sense to them. What they feel, what works for them, and what seems compelling - that is their truth and they claim an absolute right to it. No one should even attempt to tell them differently. (3) They gather viewpoints to suit their selfish desires. Although they profess objectivity, their only defense for their viewpoints is that those viewpoints suit their desires.

Such teachers have a following because they are telling people “whatever their itching ears want to hear.” These people are following myths. Be careful. False teaching can be found in many places - even inside the doors of some churches. Like Timothy, you must “keep a clear mind in every situation” and seek God’s Word for the truth.

(taken from NLT Life Application Study Bible;

2 Timothy 4:3-5 (Listen)

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Regarding Other Ways to Salvation

Acts 4:12 (Listen)

12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

says, “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved. (ESV)”

Christ is the only way.

The Positive of the Situation
I’ve been encouraged to hear about many local churches and pastors banding together to denounce this man’s teaching. Typically, Frankfort churches have held a “you do your thing and we’ll do ours” attitude - or “stay out of our business and we’ll stay out of yours.” However, in this situation, local churches are keeping a Kingdom mindset and concerned with the teaching Christians are receiving in local churches. There is a genuine concern for truth among many churches. This is a good thing.

Please pray for this individual. Please pray that through Biblical methods, and by the grace of God, this man may come to a proper understanding of God’s truths. Pray for his church body and his church leaders. Pray that all churches may hold God’s Word high and lifted up, and not rely on man-made opinions.

Travel Plans?

There is a rumor floating around the internet that says the Dave Matthews Band will be performing two concerts at Chicago’s Wrigley Field next summer.  It’s even popped up in a Chicago newspaper article discussing the Cubs upcoming season.  Something to the effect of “the only certainty in center field next season will be Dave Matthews, whose band is scheduled to perform during the All-Star break.”

This highly interests me.  I’ve never visited Chicago, and I’ve missed DMB on tour for the past couple of summers.  I’ve always said that if I ever go to Chicago, I will have to visit Wrigley Field.  I better start saving my pennies, just in case…

The Point Reaches Germany

I’ve been informed the sermon recordings from The Point are being listened to weekly in Germany.  Everyone’s favorite German, Nele, has started a house church and downloads the sermons each week.  Rick gave her a “shout out” in this morning’s sermon.

(For those that don’t know - Nele was a foreign exchange student that stayed with Tim & Cari Chase last year.  She’s good people.)

My Reason For Playing

While driving to church this morning, MercyMe’s version of “Little Drummer Boy” came up on my iPod. It couldn’t have been better timing, considering I was on my way to play drums for worship. There are two lines that I believe MercyMe added to the song (I wasn’t able to find them in other versions):

I played my drum for Him
Oh I played my best for Christ

These two lines mean a lot to me. It’s important that every time I play, I keep these words on my mind to remind me of who I should always focus my attention.
