Laridian Releases NLTse for Palm

Finally!  Laridian has finally released the NLTse for their MyBible Palm software.  This has become my translation-of-choice, so I’m pretty excited about it.  For a limited time, you can get it for 25% off, or around $11.  If you’re a fan of the NLTse, and own a Treo or other Palm device, go check it out.

Criminals Around the Corner?

It seems someone who lives a stone’s throw away from my abode is being investigated for being involved in a credit card scam.  Kinda makes you really wonder what goes on next door, eh?

Dear God

This was too funny/cute to not post:

Academy Awards

I was pleasantly entertained with the 79th Academy Awards last night.  I thought Ellen DeGeneres did a good job as host (I laughed out loud a few times) and the entertainment was well-selected.  It was probably the first time I’ve ever watched the Academy Awards from start to finish, so I really can’t compare it to previous years.  It also made me realize how many good movies I haven’t seen yet.  I think first on the list will be The Departed, of course.

Recording Notes: CKCB’s Triskaidekaphobia

I’ve decided to start detailing my recordings through this blog. I get a lot of questions asking what I use and how I record. These posts will shed a little light on each of my recordings. For the occasion, I even purchased a nifty little notebook to take with me to recording gigs to detail my equipment, setup and more.

With that said, here’s my notes from today’s recording of the Central Kentucky Concert Band’s Triskaidekaphobia concert. First question - what is Triskaidekaphobia, you ask? Turns out, it’s the fear of the number thirteen. It was also the designation to celebrate Dr. Pete LaRue’s thirteenth year with the CKCB.

Location: Transylvania University’s Haggin Auditorium (Lexington, KY)

Setup: I used five microphones across the front of the stage. Two Shure KSM109’s were in an A-B stereo configuration on a 12′ tall studio boom (I nicknamed it “Behemoth” since it’s fairly bulky for mic stand). These mics were center stage, directly behind the conductor’s podium. Stage left and stage right were Shure PG81 mics on approx. 10′ tall stands. The fifth mic was an Oktava MK219 on a standard 6′ boom stand. This mic was positioned between the center mics and the stage right mic to pick up the guest soloist - soprano Janis Dellinger Bryant. Cables (50′ and 25′ lengths) were ran backstage to my recording rig.

For this occasion, I decided to use my Behringer Xenyx 2442FX for mic preamps. I came out of the channel inserts using a Jade Audio TRS snake, into an Edirol FA-101, which enabled me to multitrack the five channels. Multitracking enables me to mix and edit the audio after the concert to achieve a nice balance between the different mics. The Edirol FA-101 ran via FireWire into my 12″ Apple iBook G4, which is running Mackie Tracktion 2 software. I recorded the audio onto my new LaCie 250GB FireWire drive, which boasts 7200rpm and 8MB cache.

CKCB Triskaidekaphobia NotesThe concert lasted approximately an hour, and seemed to come off without a hitch. In an ideal world, I would’ve taken pictures of my setup to post here for you to see (point taken - I will do this from now on!). I hope to also provide audio samples very soon, as well. For now, you can be happy with a picture of my notes!

The Presence of the Lord

When the priests came out of the Holy Place, a thick cloud filled the Temple of the LORD. The priests could not continue their service because of the cloud, for the glorious presence of the LORD filled the Temple.

1 Kings 8:10-11

10 And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the Lord, 11 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.

(NLT)

This is how powerful our worship experience should be. Worship is often defined as coming into the presence of God. We should be so powerfully moved by the presence of God that we can hardly continue our service. How awesome would that be? How amazing would it be to let down our guard of worrying if the person next to us can hear our terrible singing voice on a Sunday morning, and just SING!

If there’s one thing that bothers me most on a Sunday morning is when I look out from the drums and see blank faces and standing-still-as-stone bodies during the worship time. If we truly want God to move during our worship, we need to make an attempt to come into His presence. If your offering to God during worship is putting your hands in your pocket and standing still, you may need to rethink your worship strategy!

It is my prayer that this passage can resonate in our churches, and our lives can be so filled with the presence of God that we can hardly continue our service.

This Blog It Is a Changin’

As you can see, there’s some renovatin’ goin’ on in these parts of the blogosphere. I’ve finally mustered up enough self-discipline to actually work on my own website. Yes, it’s a sad state of affairs when I go and make everyone else’s websites look real purdy, but can’t seem to keep my own neat and tidy. I’d been toyin’ with the idea of creatin’ my own Wordpress template, but there just ain’t enough time in the day for this here website-designin’ bloke. So, I browsed around the Wordpress theme directory and found this neat-and-clean (”so fresh and so clean” as my good friends Outkast would say) theme.

You’ll also notice, I’ve rigged it up with my root directory - briananandrewdodson.com. Now, my website and blog are one-and-the-same. I’ve only been able to create a few of the pages so far, but keep checkin’ back, as I’ll be gettin’ around to some more renovatin’ real soon. Check back for updates such as - Drums, Music, Calendar & Contact pages, the return of my Flickr badge in the sidebar, an eBible badge and possible Verse of the Day dohickey in the sidebar, and hopefully lots more new-and-excitin’ features.

Y’all come on back now, ya hear?

Ignorance is Bliss

I don’t want to be a church leader. I don’t want to lead teams, or committee’s or anything of the sort. It’s not that I don’t agree with the idea of church’s having groups that lead the church’s decision-making. I’ve found that on a personal level, it distracts me from the main reason of church - worshiping God.

I made this mistake at my former church. I became too invested in the decision-making of the church, and found that I didn’t enjoy the purpose of church anymore. When I came to The Point, in the early stages of the church, I found myself questioning some of the decision-making. It was then that I decided I wanted to separate myself from any investment into church leadership and decision-making.

In the past week, this feeling has once again been confirmed in me. I’ve come to the realization that every church - even great churches - experience conflict and tension. With that said, a lot of churches handle conflict very well, and that’s a great thing. Sadly, some churches don’t handle conflict well. I believe TPCC handles conflict & tension well.

So… I’m going to keep attempting to not get involved in decision-making and keep trying to enjoy church.

Andy McKee

Everyone should check out Andy McKee’s music.  He’s an amazing acoustic guitarist.  I came across him by way of a friend on MySpace.  Not only is his playing unbelievable - it’s also enjoyable music to listen to.  Go check him out:
