Do You Know Your Megiddo?

with one comment

I’ve been digging into my new ESVSB for the past couple of weeks since its release.  It’s by far the most complete study Bible I’ve yet to come across.  Last night I started reading from a few of the articles in the back – one of them being on the subject of archeology and the Bible.  Mentioned in the article is Megiddo.  Not being familiar with Megiddo, I hopped onto Wikipedia and found this:

Megiddo (Hebrew: מגידו‎) is a hill in modern Israel near the Kibbutz of Megiddo, known for historical, geographical, and theological reasons.

Later in the Wikipedia article is this:

In 2005, Israeli archaeologist Yotam Tepper of Tel-Aviv University discovered the remains of a church, believed to be from the third century, a time when Christians were still persecuted by the Roman Empire. Among the finds is an approx. 54 square meter large mosaic with a Greek inscription stating that the church is consecrated to “the God Jesus Christ.” The mosaic is very well preserved and features geometrical figures and images of fish, an early Christian symbol. It is speculated that this may be the oldest remains of a church in the Holy Land.[2] The remains were found within the grounds of a military prison, and Israeli authorities are currently speculating about moving the prison.

I don’t know about you, but I think it’s pretty cool to hear that people were worshipping Jesus in the third century.  Helps to affirm my faith.

Fall Is Here

without comments

Fall is officially here.  Well, I don’t know the official start date, and I’m too lazy to look it up right now, but it’s getting cooler in Kentucky.  I wore a hoodie today to “will” the cooler weather along and to stick around.  I also found some good fall pictures.  Go check them out!

Christmas In October

with one comment

Tomorrow, the ESV Study Bible will be released.  At long last.  There’s been a whole lot of hype and advertising leading up to its release.  Crossway has also generously given out samples from the book, promo videos and more.  I was able to hold and browse through an advanced copy at the Resurgence Conference.

I decided against pre-ordering a copy.  I’m particular about my Bibles, so I’d rather walk into a store and touch and feel all of the different bindings and decide from there which one I like best.  Of course, the rather expensive calfskin edition is probably the nicest.  But, I’m not quite sure I want to drop $175 for it.  Okay, I’m positive I don’t want to spend $175 on that edition.  So, I’ll stick with the leather or trutone edition.

Random Blogging

without comments

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done some random blogging.  Too long.  Here goes:

  • I can’t believe UK lost to South Carolina.  Again.  Same thing as last year.  They just didn’t play well at all.  Special teams gave up 14 points.  There’s your ballgame right there.  Sure, the offense didn’t play well, but how can you win giving up 14 points on special teams?
  • The ESV Study Bible will be released on Wednesday.  I’m not sure there’s ever been as much hype over a Bible before.  I can’t imagine people getting all jacked up when the King James was released way-back-when, although it’s kind of funny to think about.  People lining up outside the Lifeway tent in the local village, waiting for them to open.  You get the picture.
  • I rescanned all of my cable channels last night.  A friend told me that if you have an HD compatible TV and do that ever so often, you’ll pick up new channels.  The odd thing was that my TV found over 200 digital channels.  But, since I don’t have the DTV package, I can’t view them.  Oh well.  The good news is that I discovered I can get ESPNHD and ESPN2HD.  That will come in handy for upcoming UK football & basketball games.
  • Admittedly, I grow a little more weary as Election Day gets closer.  There’s no chance I’d ever vote for Obama, but I’m not too enthused about McCain either.  Palin’s had some slip ups as of late, as well.  I will say this – neither candidate will fix all of America’s problems in four years’ time.  The question is, which one will fix some of our problems and not create more?

Social Network Junkie

without comments

For some time now, I’ve had MySpace and Facebook accounts.  I’m on Facebook more often than MySpace, and the Facebook stuff gets updated more often.  It’s a pretty good way to keep in touch with friends.

This weekend, I started a Twitter account.  I’d been reluctant to dedicate any more time to another social network, but I find Twitter to be pretty easy to keep up with.  I can text message status updates to my account.  I might get on my actual profile page once in a while, but probably not as much as Facebook.

I’ve added Facebook and Twitter badges to my sidebar on this blog for others to keep up.  These social networks create transparency between you (the faithful blog reader) and myself.  Not that I live a very exciting life, but if I keep up with it, you’ll see what I’m up to all the time.  With that said, maybe I should start working on some websites that I’ve been putting off!
