News & Notes
Here’s a rundown of a few random things:
- Jerry Falwell passed away today. Shane did a short write up, and Challies chimed in as well. I don’t know much about him, but I know that you either love him or hate him, judging by society’s opinion of him. Not long ago, I watched a sermon of his on television, and actually took notes. I have to admit that I didn’t agree with a lot of what he said in that sermon.
- I ended up leaving work at five. I figured if I waited around and the system didn’t get fixed, I would’ve wasted my evening. Instead, I’m enjoying a night at home. I’ll just need to buckle down and be efficient tomorrow to catch up.
- I officially canceled my Verizon account today. For the past several months, I’ve carried a Sprint Treo, but the cost to cancel my Verizon contract was more than it took to just pay the bill each month until the contract ran out. I was pleasantly surprised that the call took less than five minutes. They were extremely nice and didn’t question me at all. No transfers to retention departments. Easy as pie.

Thoughts Before the DVD
As I wrap up a few more things on my last day of work for the week, I have some thoughts about the DVD on my mind. (This post would be in reference to the Josh Martin Band concert being taped for a DVD this weekend, for those that don’t know)
- Not to give away too many secrets, but we’ve been practicing to a click track (i.e., metronome), and we’re planning on using it for the performance. I’ve adjusted to it fairly well in rehearsals, so it doesn’t freak me out to think about using it for the performance. I’ve done it a time or two at church, and I practice to a metronome, so it shouldn’t be a big deal. It’s in everyone else’s ears too, so that helps if one of us happens to get off track.
- I’m handling the audio recording for the gig. I’ve flawlessly recorded 20 channels every single rehearsal except for one. At that rehearsal, I was playing with a bunch of settings in my software, so I think that’s why it didn’t record well that night. Nevertheless, I’m a little more freaked about whether or not the recording will turn out than how I play. I just keep telling myself that if something happens and the recording stops or freezes that we can just stop and start again. No biggie. Focus on the playing. Focus on the playing.
- It’s been recommended that we wear base makeup for the occasion. I admit that it won’t be the first time I’ve worn makeup. Saxton’s played a gig for KET once and we wore makeup. Time to get in touch with the metrosexual side of myself.
- I’m really getting into the two new songs we’ll be playing – “Clumsy Believer” and “Christ Is Our Life” are coming along nicely, and I’m enjoying them.
- All indications point to us having a good crowd on hand. Sounds like at least in the ballpark of 100 are guaranteed. Two hundred would be awesome.
- We get to record our version of one of my favorite worship songs. I really like our version, so it’ll be cool to get a good, clean recording of it.
- I bought a new shirt for the occasion. Hair cut tonight. Going all out.

Criminals Around the Corner?
It seems someone who lives a stone’s throw away from my abode is being investigated for being involved in a credit card scam. Kinda makes you really wonder what goes on next door, eh?

Random Blogging
Since I haven’t blogged this week, I figure I’ll do a little random blogging…. let’s begin…
AOL Open Ride
If there are any AOL users out there, I recommend downloading Open Ride if you haven’t already done so. I’m still not a big fan of AOL (I rarely use it), but Open Ride is a big step up from past software they’ve put out. The downside? Not available on Mac yet. Here’s the link:
the Josh Martin Band
The JMB is planning our first live DVD. We’re very excited. Be sure to keep March 31st available on your calendars. That’s when we plan to record the DVD at Cedarmore. We have a few new songs in the works, that will be a part of the DVD. As a Christmas surprise, we’ve posted a little gift for all of you on our website:
Cincinnati Bengals
My Bengals are getting hot at the right time of the year – unlike those Colts (sorry, Shane). The tough part is, they will pretty much have to win all of their remaining games to make it into the playoffs – against some tough competition. A Monday night game against the Colts, a trip to Denver, and a division battle with Pittsburgh. Even though Denver & Pittsburgh aren’t playing well this year, they’re still tough teams to play this time of year.
New iPod
Since I plan on giving my iPod to my brother for Christmas (don’t worry – he won’t be reading this), I’ve purchased a new iPod. It’s one of the fancy, whiz-bang iPods with the color screen and plays videos. As I type this, I’m attempting to rip Christmas Vacation to my computer to transfer to the iPod. The next cool thing will be downloading sermon videos from the likes of Mark Driscoll and John Piper.
First Snow
Just to make it official, Frankfort is experiencing its first snow of the season – Thursday, December 7th. Nothing significant, but it’s white, falling from the sky, and sticking to the ground. I am pro-snow. I’m not quite sure I’d like to live somewhere that it snowed nearly everyday, but I don’t complain when we get a lot of snow in our area. Last season was disappointing, so hopefully we’ll get more this year.

What Is Postmodernism?
Several people have been asking me about postmodernism since I returned from the conference. Seeing as I didn’t have a real grasp of it before the conference, I wasn’t quite sure what it meant either. But, the main theme of the conference dealt with postmodernity, so I came away with a better understanding. Thanks to the glory of Wikipedia, here’s an article that might help define it for you:

More Blogging to Come…
Pardon the lack of blogging the past week or so… several things have been in the works, and I’ll be bloggin’ about ‘em soon…
1. Spent the evening working on the new JMB website. Should be ready-for-operation by tomorrow night, including a web store to order t-shirts, CDs, etc.
2. The new JMB album is in the very final stages of mixing (I promise). Plan on doing some minor tweaking tomorrow & Wednesday, and that should hopefully put it to bed.
3. Some *potential* big news on the horizon. (hint: I’ve blogged about this sort of “big” news before – long, long ago). Should know more by the end of this week.
4. Been doing LOTS of reading lately – Kyle Lake’s “Understanding God’s Will” and “(Re)Understanding Prayer,” Donald Miller’s “Searching for God Knows What,” and Piper’s “Desiring God.” Not to mention, the book of Hosea, and various readings from the Gospels. Learning a LOT from this experience – more to come on this.
5. Gonna help out my Mexican friend’s baseball team in the coming weeks. I’m looking forward to getting back out on the diamond and helping them learn the game of baseball.
6. Currently listening to Keane’s new album – upon first listen… eh. “Is It Any Wonder” is the best song I’ve heard in a long while, but nothing else has caught my attention just yet. However, it usually takes a few listens before some songs hit me.
More to come….
A Glimpse Into My Past
I came across the “featured sermon” on John Piper’s website just now. It was from late 1986, and provided a glimpse into what was going on in my life when I was too young to pay attention, or understand. It turns out, the glimpse into the past is also a glimpse at the present. Seemingly, the world is no different now…
(it’s a long read, but worth it, if you have the time)
Evolution Debunked
In an effort to prove evolution, it seems those responsible for this story are overlooking a huge reason why this Turkish family walks on all fours: “The siblings, the subject of a new BBC documentary to be aired on March 17, suffer from a genetic abnormality that may prevent them from walking upright,” (Yahoo.com; emphasis mine).
In short, they don’t walk on all fours due to not evolving. They walk on all fours because it’s physically impossible for them to walk upright.
Podcasts
I’m in the process of downloading several podcasts through iTunes as I type this. Including: The Vine (Southeast Christian Church’s emerging church service), John Piper, & Derek Webb. There’s tons more – ESPN Radio, BBC news, talk shows, comedy, all sorts of stuff.
A podcast is a fancy word for this: an MP3 that you can download, transfer to an MP3 player or keep on your computer, and listen to at your convenience. iTunes is a fascilitator of hundreds of podcasts that are available on the internet.
If you want to keep up with news, sports, sermons, talk shows, etc., and have a fast internet connection, download iTunes and get some podcasts. They’re purty kewl.
