Gig Update
The Josh Martin Band played in Cynthiana this past weekend at Cornerstone Christian Church (our keyboard player’s home church). It meets at Harrison Co. Middle School.
I woke up to find I’d overslept by thirty minutes. This wasn’t really a big deal, as we’d planned on getting to the church pretty early. I arrived at the school just a little while after the rest of the band, only to discover I’d forgotten my hi-hats (in my haste to leave my apartment that morning). Thanks to the janitor, I searched the school’s band room with no luck. Someone from the church dabbles in playing the drums, so they ran home to get their hi-hats. While I appreciate the gesture immensly, I soon discovered their hi-hats were high-grade aluminum. Seriously. I think trash can lids would’ve had a better sound. Seriously.
Fortunately, with my jazz/improv background, I was able to get through the gig relying on tambourine and my ride cymbal. The thing is, I really enjoy when I have to rethink my parts like that. I like playing on-the-fly.
It turned out to be a great gig. Two girls from the church’s youth group made their public professions of faith afterward. Way cool.
