Giving XM a whirl

without comments

I’m currently giving XM radio a try. If not for the way-cool Delphi MyFi (the portable XM player), I’d probably stick to CDs, MP3s, the iPod and iTunes.

Thanks to Wireless Blue and Dwayne, I’m testing out a MyFi as I type this. Currently, “Coming Down Again” by the Rolling Stones is playing on The Loft. I basically have every possible genre of music at my fingertips, as well as news, sports, talk shows & weather. The great part about the MyFi is that it comes with every possible accessory you’ll ever need (car kit, antenna, docks, ear buds, power supplies, everything). I’ve installed a car kit in my CRV, and the home kit. When I’m ready to hit the road, I take the MyFi out of the home dock, pop it into the car dock and keep listening. It’s portable, as well - with a battery lasting up to five hours. Essentially, I could realistically never be without XM radio.

I’m particularly interested in the Major League Baseball coverage. If I decide to keep it, I’ll be able to listen to every Cincinnati Reds broadcast this season. With the departure of Fox Sports Ohio on our local cable system, it’s been hard for me to keep up with them, aside from the internet.

In regards to other sports channels, coverage for the ACC and Big Ten are available (sadly, not the SEC and Kentucky), NASCAR radio, ESPN, and a few more.

My thinking is that it may curb my spending on CDs and album downloads at the iTunes Music Store. At the same time, I’m not sure I’ll like not having control over listening to exactly what I want, whenever I want. I’ll be stuck with whatever’s playing on XM at the time - but hopefully, that’ll suffice.

We’ll see!
