MP3ing My Life Away

without comments

I’ve continued the process of MP3ing my entire CD collection this week. So far, I’m through the “M” section of my main CD rack (yes - it’s alphabetical - how else would I find a particular CD among the masses?). This does not include baby CD Racks #1 & 2, or my four large CD carrying cases (not all of which will get MP3ed).

I’ve now exceeded the 40GB plateau, which poses an interesting problem. My intention of selling my 20GB iPod in favor of a 40GB model is now up in the air. I’m confident I’ll approach the 60GB plateau of MP3 storage by the end of this process.

My initial thought is that I’ll purchase a portable 80GB hard drive. Something I can use at home and at work (the two places I listen to music the most) to store my iTunes music library (MP3 library - whatever you want to call it). This will save me the trouble of selling my current iPod, and should be more cost-effective in the long run. Whenever I need something to listen to music away from the computer (gym, in the car, etc.), I’ll take along the iPod stored with 20GB of music of which I’m currently inclined to listen.

I can hear you now - why can’t I be satisfied with a 20GB iPod? You see - I need to have my entire music collection with me at all times. I never know what I’ll be in the mood to listen to. Just today, I thought, “I’d like to listen to some John Mayer.” Turns out, I only had THREE of his songs on my iPod. Entire music collection with me at all times? Problem solved.
