NLT Study Bible

with 3 comments

So, I totally missed the boat on the release of the NLT Study Bible. I had absolutely no clue it was in the works. I checked it out tonight at the bookstore and it looks pretty good. Of course, its timely release is surely a ploy to compete with the October release of the ESV Study Bible. I was surprised at the sheer amount of study notes included. Nearly every verse has something.

I might have to rethink my previous plan of the ESV Study Bible being the last bible I purchase for a while. I feel like I’m in the minority of people who are both ESV and NLT fans. To be clear, I’m a fan of the second edition of the NLT. The first edition was quite bad. The second edition puts it well in line with the NIV in terms of readability and accuracy for a paraphrase translation. I really like its style and how it reads.

Go check out the official site.

  1. I assure you the September release was not a ploy of any kind. We’d had a September 2008 release date planned for several months before we even heard of an ESV Study Bible in development. The proximity of the release dates is probably not something either publisher would have planned, but I know Tyndale’s release plans (including the online version) were completely unaffected by what Crossway was doing.

  2. Hey Keith,

Probably a poor choice of words on my end. I just found it interesting that both bibles were being released so closely to each other. Given the popularity of the ESV and the rising popularity of the NLT, I just found it interesting.

Thanks for the comment! I really do like the NLT and I look forward to getting a copy of the Study Bible for myself. Of course, if you wanted to send me a free copy, I’m sure I could find the time to give it a thorough review!

  3. Andrew,
No harm done. I’ve seen several comments around the blogosphere about how we must have worked really hard to slip in under the ESV Study Bible and get out ahead of them, but really our development process had been going on since 2001.

As for a review copy, I wish I could help you, but I’m just a lowly editor. I didn’t even get my copy until dozens of blog reviews had already come out! My first glimpse of an actual bound copy of the NLTSB was on Nick Norelli’s blog. :)
