Sweetly Broken

without comments

As most of you know, I listen to a lot of music. A lot. In a given day, it’s safe to say I listen to about 10-12 hours of music. Not all of this is engaged listening, as about 8 hours of it is while I’m at work. It’s good because it helps me make it through the work day, sometimes puts me in a good mood, and a lot of times keeps me in check with God (it’s hard to get frustrated at work when a song like “Wonderful Cross” comes up on my iTunes mix). But, it’s also bad because I feel like it’s made me overly-critical about music, and has definitely desensitized me to what makes a “great” song (in my opinion). I listen to so much music that a lot of music today seems boring to me. Needless to say, I have a pretty diverse music collection to keep things interesting.

Once in a while, though, a song comes along that I can’t get enough of. A couple of summers ago, it was Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound.” Last summer, it was Keane’s “Is It Any Wonder?” When MercyMe’s latest album came out, it was “Hold Fast.” I’m still a huge fan of “Hold Fast,” though. This past week at Cedarmore, I heard a song by their praise band that has actually slipped my attention to this point. Jeremy Riddle’s “Sweetly Broken.” Since it’s my current song-of-choice, I decided to post the lyrics:

To the cross I look, to the cross I cling
Of its suffering I do drink
Of its work I do sing
For on it my Savior both bruised and crushed
Showed that God is love
And God is just

Chorus:
At the cross You beckon me
You draw me gently to my knees, and I am
Lost for words, so lost in love,
I’m sweetly broken, wholly surrendered

What a priceless gift, undeserved life
Have I been given
Through Christ crucified

You’ve called me out of death
You’ve called me into life
And I was under Your wrath
Now through the cross I’m reconciled

Chorus:
At the cross You beckon me
You draw me gently to my knees, and I am
Lost for words, so lost in love,
I’m sweetly broken, wholly surrendered

In awe of the cross I must confess
How wondrous Your redeeming love and
How great is Your faithfulness

If you haven’t heard this song, definitely check it out. You can stream it on Jeremy’s MySpace page.
